I’m With The DJ Part 1

I’ve never been to a rave.  I’ve never been to a rave or an anime convention.  Come Monday, both of those will change.  My friend Joey (who performs under the name G-type)was contracted to DJ at the rave at Anime Banzai, one of the biggest cons in the state.  He usually gets excited to go to banzai, but now that he’s spinning at the rave his excitement is over 9000.

He was at my house when he signed the contract.  Mostly because I have a scanner, but that’s beside the point.  The contract allowed for a +1, and since I can “behave” I lucked out.  We went up to the Davis County Convention Center for sound check, and to pick up our badges.  Oh, and to officially meet Xander the fellow running the rave, and also performing in it.

Neither of us knew what Xander looked like, so when we arrived we asked a Banzai staffer if he knew where he was.  His response was at first confusion, but then came some sort of familiarity.  “You mean the guy who looks like Doctor Who?” It took every fiber of my nerdom to #1 not correct him (Doctor Who is the name of the show.  The main protagonist is simply The Doctor) and #2 ask which one.  As you can see, Xander looks like 10.

Before becoming a performer, Xander was a producer.  Which explains why he produced, in addition to his 2 in 1 laptop, two MIDI pads.  During sound check he informed some of the gathered volunteers that he had Tetris, Legend of Zelda and Pokemon in his set.  I, along with the volunteers, were really excited by hearing that.  I was more excited for Joey’s, which I hadn’t heard.

Xander’s setup is, as I mentioned, the 2 in 1 and the pair of MIDI pads.  Joey’s looks more like a traditional setup: two turntables with a mixer in between.

He’s had the turntables for a little while, but the mixer he bought in the hopes he would be playing Banzai.  He put together some solid mixes, worked at his craft, and here he is.  During his sound check there was some feedback, and some other issues related to his using RCA cables.  Thankfully Ryan, the sound engineer, provided Joey with some XLR cables (see the big ports with the three silver contacts in them, next to the CAUTION on the mixer?  XLR ports).

After some non-verbal communication with the guys at the boards, Joey was back to sound check.

After the declaration that he was good, I helped pack up and (since I had no real desire to hang out for another three hours to pick up my badge) I left.  The rave itself isn’t until tomorrow night (Joey goes on at Midnight), while Banzai itself officially opens up today.  Registration is $35 today, but jumps to $40 tomorrow.  Your badge is good through Sunday if you choose to come.  I’ll be there today to get my badge and hang out, and I’ll be there tomorrow at 8PM until as of yet to be determined time.
