Granger Lancers vs. Manti Templars

On December 3rd the Granger Lancers welcomed the Templars of Manti High School into the gymnasium for the Endowment Game.  This game would feature the Varsity squads of both schools.  Could the Lancers make it two in a row, after coasting to an easy victory over Cyprus the week before? If they were going to, Manti would not make it easy.

Manti dominated the first quarter, but had a more difficult time imposing their will upon the Lancers in the second quarter.  Granger trailed at half-time 26-24.

In the second half the teams went toe to toe, matching each others runs.  Neither team could pull away from the other.  In the waning seconds of the game Alex Arellano was at the foul line shooting free throws.  Granger was in the bonus, meaning it was a 1 And 1 situation: if he made the first free throw, he would get another.  Unfortunately he missed the first free throw, but senior center Makol Mawien was right there for the put back slam dunk.  The score was now tied, and things were about to get bizarre.

As Manti was inbounding the ball a Granger fan was pushed on to the court and made contact with the ball handler.  The officials stopped play with 1.1 seconds on the clock, and called both coaches on to the court.  The situation was explained and was met with utter disbelief by coach Chandler.  Granger would be assessed a technical foul, which gave Manti two foul shots and possession of the ball after the shots.

Stuart Lott took to the line for Manti, and made one of the two free throws.  Manti then imbounded the ball and batted it into the air, killing what little was left on the clock.  The Templars could barely contain their excitement about winning a hard fought game.  The Lancers, on the other hand, sulked into the locker room, knowing they let a victory slip through their fingers.

The Lancers’ next opponents are the 1-1 Royals of Roy High School on December 5.  All three squads will be playing, with the Sophomore game tipping off at 3:30 PM
